Matt’s Story

I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers, I like to problem solve and I decided early on that University wasn’t for me, so I decided upon doing an apprenticeship. I chose to do an apprenticeship over University because I learn better from doing and performing tasks rather than learning about how I could do something. For me, it was important that I was learning on the job because it means I’m able to learn from my mistakes. My career aspirations haven’t changed at all since I was quite young.

My aim has always been to become a chartered accountant and it does still seem to be going that way as I start that next year.I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers, I like to problem solve and I decided early on that University wasn’t for me, so I decided upon doing an apprenticeship. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to somebody else, but it does depend on how you learn. If you learn better by actually performing, then an apprenticeship is definitely your best option. I always enjoyed maths at school, but I struggled more when it came to revising for exams… Mainly because I have to be putting my knowledge into practice, to get the most out of it. I could revise best by doing past papers, but obviously they’re limited!

I’m working with people that are qualified and have been doing accountancy for a long time. They are passing their expertise onto me which is helping my career development. I know that both my colleagues and my tutors at Truro and Penwith College are there if I need support in any aspect of my work. Working at Harland Accountants is just so valuable, I’m always picking up on everybody else’s knowledge and being able to utilise it myself.

At my work place, I do a lot of different things, and because of this I’d say I’ve got quite a lot of responsibility. In our office, we don’t have an admin person, which means I do a lot of that on top of all my other responsibilities. But it’s really important because it keeps the flow of everything going. Other than that, I do day to day preparation of sole trader, partnership and company accounts. I also do payrolls for companies and book-keeping as well as VAT returns so there is always some variety in what I do.

I really enjoy the training at Truro & Penwith as well. I have passed every exam so far and they are all going well because I get lots of support. I find what I learnt to be really useful because there have been a few units that I learn at college which also allow me to bring that knowledge into work. These are especially useful because I’m learning the theory behind my practice.

Just work hard and focus on continuing your development. I wouldn’t take anything for granted and an apprenticeship is a great opportunity and an amazing opportunity. Make the most of it!
